Drs Patrick Hylton and Paul Goddard from the School of Psychology and Ben Kisby from the department of Social & Political Science respond to a report by Demos about young people and citizenship. The Guardian reported that this Demos study claims that today’s teenagers are more engaged and concerned about social issues than ever. Kisby, Goddard et al. have been conducting a study investigating what being a citizen, and citizenship, means to young people. In a letter to the Guardian they reported that their study confirmed what Demos report, but also they warned against over-generalising this claim, stating that their investigation demonstrated 10 different versions of citizenship that young people use to understand themselves.
